Matthew 9:10

"And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples."
Matthew 9:10 KJV

What is the meaning of this?  What does it mean that Jesus sat with sinners and publicans?  What is the importance of this.

  1. Everyone back then had the wrong view of God. They were seeing someone who would only "hang out" with the pious and "holy", like the Pharisees. They were stunned to figure out that God's plan dealt with redemption of sinners, not a "pat on the back" club. Jesus wasn't there to raise funds and glad hand the rich. He was there to lift the poor, the miserable, the "huddled masses."

    1. Thank you. How do you think that plays into how we should behave? Or how we should be seen? I understand it's ok to be around, to love and to witness to sinners ... But where is the line? Where do we draw the line?

    2. Jesus never lost control of the situation. He never was unfaithful to His Father and Himself. And, those who He was with WANTED to hear what he had to say. Unlike, say, hanging out with the Freedom From Religion Foundation, or a group of "friends" who are there to party and wish you'd shut up.
